What is it?

I think this could be some kind of clothing accessory, but I really don't know what it was used for. It has no marks I could find, but I believe it is sterling. It is about 2 - 5/8" in diameter, and the center opening is ~ 7/8" with three adjusting positions. It has two holes, one on either side but I don't know if they are for a necklace or a pin or? -- there was nothing else with it when I got it as part of a lot of old jewelry.

Any info will be greatly appreciated. I'm new to silver collecting and have much to learn-- this site is a great help!

Hello Jim-

I have been trying to figure out what your item is as well. Seems to me that somehow you may be right as to it being a clothing accesory, maybe to fasten a cloak?
Also, looks like your pictures went bye bye. Can you re-post them?

I just found out what the item probably is:

As I understand it, in the 1940's and '50's women used these as hair accessories or pins for holding a single braid at the back of the head -- There would have been a bar or pin inserted through the holes in either side of the shell to anchor the hair in place.

Unfortunately, the fine folks at FreeShare are shutting down their picture hosting svc., so no more pics -- too bad. Seems I (and many others here) will need to find other options. Have any suggestions?

That's too bad about FreeShare.

I use a few different hosting services.
A good one is Photo Bucket. It's free, but you do have to register.
They offer two advantages that I like.
1) You can downsize your pictures,
2) You can keep your picturers up as long as you want.

By all accounts, an excellent freehost.
No Registration, No Popups, No Advertisements, No Passwords, No Time Limit

...and it is owned by C/Net, so it is likely to be around for years to come.

I've already used PhotoBucket and posted one picture with good results, though I will miss FreeShare for it's simplicity and ease of use.

I intend to look into the 'allyoucanupload' site as well.
