Sterling Dance Purse Maker Query

Post by eveshka »

Hello!

I acquired this dance purse through my Mom and we're trying to identify the maker. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Upright closeup of STERLING, the maker mark, and 23.

We discovered a date when we turned this upside down:

Looks like 4/1/13 or 4/9/13, so we were hoping that would help at least narrow down the timeframe for the manufacturing of the purse.

This is the little purse, closed and flat. It measures about 2.5 x 1.5 inches when closed.

If my images are too large, please do let me know; I tried using GIMP to resize and it assured me that they were less than 8" wide.

Thanks!

Hi - welcome to the forums (you did just fine with your images).

It's partially struck, but is the mark of the James E. Blake Co., typical of their production - please see here: https://www.925-1000.com/americansilver_B4.html The scratch-marks look to me like '4 113', doubtful they are a date (though I'd guess dating around the 1910s-20s), more likely for an inventory or some other identification purpose...

Oh my goodness, I had no idea it would be identified so fast! I've been paging through various makers marks websites looking for a rose symbol... I'd have never found it.

Thank you so much!!

Mom will now bury herself in research about the company, so that will give her some happiness :)

Oh wow!!

Thank you, thank you!
How neat is that?! So that's the insert card that would have been in the box with the purse when it was sold?

No, it's just an advertisement for James E. Blake Co. from 1923 that I thought may be of interest.
