Newport Sterling

Post by BRT »

Hello,

Well,I'm not positive about anything but this does say sterling, so...
I understand Newport Sterling to be a trademark or division of Gorham. I'm trying to figure out though if the "Sterling" is just part of the name or if it's actually a content designation of sterling silver. I've been trying to look up the info with little success except for the connection to Gorham.

Thanks

In the U.S. it would be an illegal trade practice to stamp the word sterling on a piece if it was not referring to the metal content, either solid (just the word sterling) or qualified (sterling plated, or sterling filled).

If it hasn’t already been said, welcome to the forum.

First use of Newport claimed by Gorham Manufaturing Co for sterling silver holloware was 1951.
