Lunchtime Talk: Precious Little Gems – 20 Years of Contemporary Metalwork Design
Tuesday 27th September 2022 - 13:00 – 13:45
Hear about 20 years of contemporary metalwork design and making in Sheffield.
Yorkshire Artspace Silversmiths Starter Studio programme launched in 2002. During the programme Sheffield Assay Office sponsored an annual commission, Precious Little Gems. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the programme this display shows a selection of pieces, highlighting the diversity and range of work produced, including the 2021 commission by Georgia Rose Clipsham.
Curator of Industry and Metalwork, Emma Paragreen will talk about some of the commissions over the last 20 years and Georgia will describe her unique commission, a set of three functional vases, inspired by Kangxi miniatures and Claudia Rankin’s ceramic caddies, incorporating her signature chain making.
The programme and the commission opportunity has marked the start of many careers, with participants successfully becoming practicing silversmiths in Sheffield and around the UK. If you are interested in finding out more or you would like to support the next generation of Silversmiths and Jewellers come along to the talk.
