ID ? Silver Lady Dish, Maker - R Delaune
Hey All,
I got this silver lady dish from a friend. He's not sure where he originally got it (He's 93, so I'll give him a break). The bottom is marked with the word "SILVER", my jeweler friend tested it and it is indeed silver. On the top edge of the dish, the maker's name is inscribed "R DELAUNE", at least that's what I made out of it. I couldn't find any hits from searching online. I was wondering if anyone hear recognizes this maker? Cheers.

I think you mean the artist or designer's name, not necessarily the maker. Does it look like the name was originally etched into the mold rather than the piece--the silver mark is an obvious after stamp. You would expect with such a nice design, the artist would not be so obscure. Any chance we're reading the name improperly. Maybe De Laune or something else?

Hi ~ welcome to the forums. The very rough casting of this piece, with numerous pinholes and grinder marks, is typical of silver 'Art Nouveau' pieces that showed up on the market in the last part of the 20th century, often sold at flea markets. It was taken from an early 20th century bronze ashtray - the original had no marks, and the awkwardness of the type would point to the 'signature' being spurious...

I found this bit of information on a less common auction site to me: P. Delaune, Jugendstil-Aschenschale mit platischem Mädchenakt,
um 1900, Messing, in der Schale bezeichnet, Länge 18 cm,(B).
The item on the auction site looks to be authentic to me. A google translate interpretation may be helpful or may someone that speaks German will explain.

For what it's worth the auction site mentioned is Dorotheum.
