An unusual order was received last week from Australia by B. T. Oakley, of the export department of the International Silver Co., 9-15 Maiden Lane. Upon opening his mail one morning last week, Mr. Oakley came upon an order for a quantity of miniature kangeroos, which are to be made of sterling silver. This order came from an Australian customer and the silver kangeroos are to be given away by the latter as paper-weights. A sculptor is now engaged in making a model and the work will be executed by the Wilcox & Evertsen factory at Meriden, Conn.

The first gem theft since the Wembley exhibition opened in April was accomplished this week, when a $6,000 pearl was taken from the showcase of the mining section of the Australian pavilion under the eyes of several bystanders who thought the thief was an exhibition official. Three men are believed to have been concerned in the robbery. Two engaged an assistant—the daughter of T. C. Wollaston, an Adelaide jeweler—to show them some jewelry. While Miss Wollaston was occupied with the two visitors, a third man calmly lifted the top of a show-case, extracted the pearl and walked slowly away. Bystanders supposed he was an official of the pavilion and gave no alarm. The other two men then left without making a purchase.

Prominent among the recent trade visitors to the United States from foreign countries is Tokutaro Osawa, managing director of the well-known wholesale watch and jewelry house of Osawa & Co., Kyoto, Japan. Mr. Osawa made an inspection of the watch movement and case factories during his tour of the country, and was much interested in the ingenious machinery and processes of manufacture. From the United States he will go to London, thence to France and Germany, and return home via the Suez Canal. In addition to its large establishment in Kyoto, the firm of Osawa & Co. has branches in Osaka and Kobe, and also in Sydney, N. S. W.

Wallace Bishop learned his trade in Birmingham and was awarded the Prince of Wales Medal from City and Guilds London for his outstanding craftsmanship in 1897. He also received first class diploma awards from the Birmingham Trade Exhibition in 1898.

Wallace Bishop moved to Australia in 1909 and was employed as a diamond ring maker with Flavelle, Roberts and Sankey Jewellers of Queen Street, Brisbane.

The company acquired Hardy Brothers in 1997.

The firm is still in business and has 50 stores throughout Queensland and NSW and more than 500 employees.
