A strange candlestick

Hi, I would appreciate any information about the object in the picture.
It looks a bit like a candle stick, but I'm not sure why the handle looks like it does and what is the purpose of the holes on the edges.
Roche is a medical company, so maybe it has some medical purpose.

Maybe a pewter ashtray where you can put your cigarettes or pipe.

Thanks, Amena. I think you are 100% correct after a little googling. What I thought is a handle, is actually for resting the pipe, and the hole in the center is for pipe-knocking cork.

I'm still curious about all the symbols at the back.
