I have a small solid silver purse (chatelaine???) that I need help identifying the maker and approximate age. Size of the purse is approx. 3-1/4" long and 2-1/4" wide. I believe this belonged to either my grandmother or great-grandmother who lived in Canada. This may be an English or American mark but I'm not sure. Any help is appreciated.
Sorry the pictures are a little blurry but this will give you an idea of the item. I also wasn't able to get a picture of the mark as it is very tiny but it is
W&H
Co. (in a heart)
with the word Sterling underneath the heart
Hello.
That mark was used by the Wightman & Hough Company, Providence, Rhode Island.
Founded in 1856. Stopped production sometime in the 1920's.
They manufactured lockets, seals, medallions and other jewelry.
Thanks for the quick response. That fits the timeline of it belonging to my grandmother. And yes it does have a dance card behind the mirror and a pencil is included. Also has a spot for calling cards at the back and 2 smaller compartments on the front side. [/quote]
