Indian Napkin Ring

Post by JanGroen »

Good day
Another find from the market today. I thought it was silver plated but what I thought was warn down planting was just tarnish. It is sold and have scenes of sort of tropical farm life on it. Can't find any markings.

::::: Serene scenes of humans working and farming with animals and traditional houses and some tropical foliage is often found on Calcutta silver. :::::
::::: I have a few pieces with this general design, and although none are hallmarked, the most likely region based on the overall theme is Calcutta. :::::

Thank you for the information. I have a snuff tin in very similar style.
I was really surprised when I realized it was solid and not plated. Most of the silver from this boot sale were very dirty and had yellow stuff on it that looked like warm plating. I found a Russian, French, Italian and German silver spoon all in the same box.

:::: Some pieces of Indian silver do have a certain look that makes you wonder if it is actually 900/925 silver and I can't fully explain it. ::::

::::: One source claimed that the stamped-out details are made using wax that coated the silver, so I always wondered if that had anything to do with the unusual look that you sometimes find on Indian silver, or it could be whatever other metals are in that 7.5-10 percent, there might be a little more tin or zinc contained in that percentage as compared to other countries' silver traditions, whatever the case may be, the net effect is that a lot of these pieces are overlooked and assumed to be made of base metal or silver-plated until finally someone recognizes them for what they actually are :::::

I really love this piece as it is quality hand made. It will be worth buying if it was a lesser metal too. It made me research the different styles of Indian and area. I now have quality Persian, Kashmir and Calcutta silver pieces without hallmarks. Still need to try figure out where my snuff tin, with elephant trampling a lion, come from.
