Hi, I have a cigarette case which clearly marked. Maker Henry Williamson Ltd & the date letter is 1919.
On the Birmingham makers page H.W.L.D is registered 1893~1912
Have I read the hallmark incorrectly or are the registration dates a guide only?
Regards momma

Makers registration dates H.W.L.D
Hi Momma,
Your dating is correct, 1919. There could be many reasons for hallmarks to show a later date, this would be the date of the assay, not necessarily the date of manufacture, although they are usually very close.
Dates on the closure of firms can sometimes be very vague, firms go into receivership, sometimes production stops, sometimes not and remember this was a period when Great Britain was at war, maybe the factory was temporarily converted to some other use.
Regards Trev.
