Pictured below are (4) separate images of a concertina style cigarette case crafted in .935 silver (argentium). My question to you knowledgeable folks is the hallmark and country of origin. Any help appreciated, thanks in advance!
Just to be clear…technically there is no “hallmark” found here. That is to say, no authorized authority seems to be regulating the application of marks related to a fineness standard. More like self regulation by the maker.
Mark 1 is likely just a maker mark of initials. It is incuse gothic letters beginning “G.” or “C.”. Next letter may be “k”, but hard to tell with certainty. [Warning, a retailer can occasionally apply a mark where we would expect a maker.]
Mark 2 silver standard of .935 points to Germany, Austria, Switzerland generally. Without additional marks, Switzerland may be the more probable. This would not be definite though.
A maker mark coupled with a silver standard would be difficult to identify unless there were an established source with some samples. Something could be buried in old threads using a search function with variable key words interposed. Good luck, and maybe the general net might yield something with what you have now.
It’s possible that one of the longer-lived German makers could have effected a change of marks. And the large “G” might also represent Gebruder for a firm of brothers. Nothing in the listed German marks under “G” or “k” seemed to be an exact match.
:::::: Found a similar example of this form that bears German hallmarks, so I'm leaning towards Germany, but I'm not sure if "GK" is the manufacturer's mark or just a retail mark that a retail mark would have applied after placing a wholesale order for these concertina silver cigarette cases. :::::
:::::: I had never seen this form before now, and examples are hard to find, maybe it just didn't sell as well as the personal cigarette cases......::::::::
