Re-plating silverplated knife blades?

Post by Blumaterial »

I have several Durgin Fairfax blunt dinner knives that have silverplated blades that were handed down to me by my grandmother as part of a lovely set. There are spots where the silverplating has worn off, mostly where it connects to the handle and along the edge, showing what I assume is some sort of steel underneath (it's a very dull dark grey color). I've found a few blogs online that say the blades can't be re-plated but they don't explain why, so I was wondering why this is? What is the harm in replating the blades? If they can't be replated, is there any danger in using them to eat in their current condition?

I am not sure why you were told that they couldn't be re-plated, since they can be. Not cheap, but possible.
