Splendor and Mystery - Splendor and Power of Oriental Jewelry
Until 5th November 2023
Just thinking about jewelry from the Orient makes you feel like you've been transported to a fairy tale from One Thousand and One Nights. Behind oriental jewelry lies beauty, wealth but also power. In addition, this jewelry is considered to have a magical function in traditional societies. It was worn to protect against harm and to obtain blessings. The materials from which the various jewelry objects are made are very different. Jewelry makers used materials such as gold, silver (also as coins), coral, beautiful stones, pearls, amber and faience.
Selected objects from the exhibition The classic, beautiful jewelry is primarily made of silver. Women received this as a wedding gift and often as a dowry from their own family. This woman's jewelry was considered the wearer's personal property and was, so to speak, a kind of social security. Oriental jewelry was passed down from generation to generation. If a piece was very worn, the silver was melted down and recreated in the same way. This meant that the memories of thousands of years could be preserved in this jewelry. For the first time, the Knauf Museum Iphofen is showing oriental jewelry from Yemen, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the Levant from Peter Hösli's magnificent collection. These are: necklaces, bracelets and collars, rings, belts, pendants, dresses decorated with jewelry, headgear and magnificent face veils, etc. Together with textiles from the Widad Kawar collection, visitors can expect a unique special exhibition that testifies to the magnificent diversity and beauty of oriental handicrafts.
