LCW Maker Demonstrations: Contemporary British Silversmiths
Thursday, 16th May 2024
Watch demonstrations by four silversmiths whose work encompasses a range of styles and techniques. In the morning you will have the opportunity to chat with and see the work of Jessica Jue and Isabella Kelley and in the afternoon the makers will be Miriam Hanid and Machi De Waard.
Isabella Anne Kelley is a silversmith fuelled by a passion for discovery and the continuous development of techniques. Fascinated by architecture and her unique perspective of the world, she draws from her surroundings finding shapes and transforming them into mesmerizing patterns, creating distinctive designs in her silverware and sculptural jewellery.
Jessica Jue is a silversmith known for her sculptural aesthetic, Jessica’s design is deeply influenced by her Chinese heritage and Austrian upbringing, in which fluid and bold designs are created. She reinvents traditional techniques in silver to craft elegantly beautiful contemporary designs. Her work is represented in several major collections including The V&A Museum, The National Museums Scotland, The Goldsmiths’ Company.
Machi De Waard is a designer jeweller who has been making modernist jewellery since 2007. She combines her studio practice with teaching jewellery making. In 2021, she co-authored Silver Jewellery Making, published by Search Press. In 2023, Machi received a Masters in Jewellery and Metal from the Royal College of Art.
Miriam Hanid designs and makes sculptural silver, inspired by movement, water and natural themes. Using her signature chasing and engraving techniques she creates organic, tactile forms, platters, detailed vessels and bold centrepieces. Her bespoke silverware features in public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Eton College and the Goldsmiths’ Company.
