Watch Chain Bar

Post by Geraldo »

This silver watch chain bar was found in a Gloucestershire field. I'm guessing that it is 1897/98 but wonder if it is an import to Britain. I'd appreciate expert clarification, please.
The markings are PPLp with lion Passant and a b date mark

The mark is of a company called Payton Pepper & Sons they started in 1882 and went limited in 1898, this mark was used between 1901 and 1914 (when l believe they finished) this works in with the date mark of 1901-1902 They worked from Vyse Street Birmingham
The mark is PPL D (lower case)

Thanks Nigel, that is very interesting. I used to pass through Vyse Street often 30-40 years ago.
