The Shape of Gold. Stories of Jewels from Ancient Italy
Until 8th September 2024
Isernia hosts the exhibition “The Shape of Gold. Stories of Jewels from Ancient Italy” at the Archaeological Museum of Santa Maria delle monache in Isernia, the exhibition “The shape of gold. Stories of jewels from ancient Italy” will be inaugurated, curated by the Archaeological Park of Sepino – Regional Directorate of Museums of Molise.
After being at the “GA Sanna” Museum in Sassari, the exhibition, which testifies to the evolution of precious stones from prehistory to the Middle Ages, arrives in Molise until 8 September 2024, and will then resume touring southern Italy.
Born from an initiative of the General Directorate of Museums, the project involves the Regional Directorates of Museums of Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Marche, Molise, Puglia and Sardinia and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii with the aim of networking, for the first time with an exhibition, the state museums, from the perspective of the National Museum System.
The Archaeological Museum of Santa Maria delle Monache is located in the heart of the historic center of the city of Isernia, inside a former Benedictine convent built in the early Middle Ages under the patronage of the Lombard counts.
Since 1934, the Museum has been a municipal antiquarium , with a collection of inscriptions and stone artefacts found in the surrounding area, and has subsequently been enriched over time with the musealisation of some of the most important archaeological finds from the Republican and Imperial era found in the town and countryside of Isernia.
Reopened on August 1, 2022, the Museum houses an archaeological collection that tells the story of the territory and the city of Isernia, from the Archaic Age to the Middle Ages.
Furthermore, a dedicated section displays the archaeological material of the Italic Sanctuary of Pietrabbondante, recounting the devotion of the Samnites.
Opening hours: Tuesdays to Saturday 08:45 - 14:20 - Sundays 08:45 - 19:15 - Closed Mondays.
Admission: €6
