Dutch Sterling? Sugar Spreader

Post by JenG »

I thought this lovely piece might be Dutch? But wonder if the petals of the flower design is appropriate for a Dutch piece or is it another European country? Also, all I can identify is the letter P in the hallmark…the piece is quite old and the hallmarks are difficult to decipher. Would be grateful for any help. Thank you. (The images are from my posting. I’m not trying to sell here. Just identify the hallmark)

Hi Jeng, welcome to the forum. We prefer to see embedded images, most of our contributors hesitate to open a link.

Indeed a Dutch sugar sifter from left to right maker's mark, Minerva head/assay office mark and year letter P for 1849. Try to clean the maker's mark with some polish and soft toothbrush perhaps we can identify the maker. The Minerva head has a small letter M in its helmet, the regional assay office letter for Schoonhoven.

Peter, I am so delighted that you took a moment to help me. Thank you! And above and beyond you imbedded my image. I thought I was so careful in reading the directions for posting ;) But clearly, I misunderstood.
I’m also delighted to know that the piece is Dutch and so early. I’m completely mesmerized by it. I’ll see if I can get the marks to come “up” a bit more. Either way, I’m so thankful to know more about this piece. Thank you.
