Pre-Revolutionary French Gold Hallmark Experts Here?

Post by Dannd »

Hi All,

I am hoping someone here is an expert on pre-revolutionary French gold hallmarks (or has more books than I do) who can help me figure out who this makers mark is for? It is on a gold perfume bottle lid and I managed to find the "discharge" hallmark (itty-bitty) for 1727-1732 (Jacques Cottin) but for the life of me I cannot figure out WHAT the first worn letter is which is making it impossible to find the maker. The last letter appears to be an M. The only goldsmith I can find with the last name starting with an M who made very very similar perfume bottle lids in that time period is Louis Mailly but the first letter doesn't look like an L to me.

Now, I know that it looks like a J but I don't believe it is a J because A) It would make the J a lot smaller than the M but B) it's also missing the top horizontal bar the J would have in that font type (see the link) (https://i.pinimg.com/736x/f3/74/3f/f374 ... 31c198.jpg)

If anyone can figure out what is the center symbol I will give you bonus points! I tried looking through "French Master Goldsmiths" book but couldn't find a match. So, if anyone has Henri Nocqs hallmark book I would greatly appreciate it!

I know this is single image area but due to the fact its not clear I have included a few photos of different angles (I hope that is okay!). Hopefully they are clear enough to see. Thank you! (cant figure out why its not embedding)

Hi,

Please embed your images as very few members will click on such links.

https://postimages.org (choose 'Share', then copy the 'Hotlink for forums' code) is recommended. Do not use Photobucket or Dropbox.

Hi,

Joseph Malherbe, "JM, un lézard" in Nocq, worked 1720-1752. He made small objects. His mark is not reproduced by Nocq. Could the symbol in your photos be a lizard seen from top ?

THANK YOU! You nailed it. Even without seeing the mark! It is definitely him, I found almost identical scent bottle toppers made by him -

Okay I included the link to bottle I found by the goldsmith as I wanted to include all the information concerning it but I guess that's against the rules so I'll just include the photo only.
