French Scent Bottle Silver Cap Hallmark Help

Post by Dannd »

Hi All,

I have a French 19th C(?) green cut crystal glass perfume bottle with a silver top. It is marked with a lozenge and I cannot figure out the last letter of the makers mark nor the symbol in the center. The first letter looks to be a J but I am thinking that the last is an M or E[?]? Do you see this as well? Anyone recognize the maker? I also included photos of the fineness mark (Boars head) but what is the mark below it? A counter hallmark? I have included multiple photos which I hope give a better view of the makers mark, I had to use my microscope to get close enough to capture the marks and this is the best I can do. Thank you!

To be honest, I cannot really read the mark below the fineness mark (Boars head).
Nevertheless, a suggestion since the mark is quite small and especially if you did not bought this item in France : would it be a French export mark ("tête de Mercure") (see here for example https://www.silvercollection.it/poinconsfrancais.html ?

I haven't been able to find the maker in my references, but may I suggest the design in the centre is a toboggan?
I was in the workshop of Chirol and Hipp two weeks ago doing research on maker's marks, and they showed me their hallmark which contains a toboggan, listed as luge in French registers.
Your photos are great, it's the hallmarks that are poor.

Hi, sorry it didn't see a notification saying I have responses. I didn't buy it in France so it is possible, however I don't really see a Mercury head when I inspect it, it looks more like a wolf or some side dog image, possibly an insect like counter hallmark? Not sure. Its very unclear unfortunately.

Ah that's a shame. I can definitely see the form of a toboggan, but usually the central symbol some how hints at the makers last name (wordplay) and I don't think it looks like an L? I know that's not always the case but its usually a hint. My other idea was that it was in the form of a work bench vice or étau in French and it definitely looks like an E?

I do have another perfume bottle, do you know anything about 18th C French hallmarks by chance? Been having a very difficult time figuring this one out also since the FIRST letter in this case isn't clear, nor the center symbol. Thank you for your suggestions!
