Silver tobacco jar Zwolle 1791
Silver tobacco jar Zwolle 1791
Beautiful silver neoclassical style tobacco jar, with beaded rims. With the city of Zwolle guild hallmarks, you don't come across something like that very often.
The city hallmark for silver objects from Zwolle is based on the city coat of arms: a shield with a 'Zwolle' cross. The letters RD above the city hallmark refer to the content of the silver, which had to meet the content of the Rijksdaalders or Thalers at the time. Silver standard 885/1000

Master's mark, a kind of 'house'
The master mark, a 'house' is from Gerrit Jan Schuurman II, registered in the Zwolle gold & silver guild 1787-1811. In addition to the master mark GIS in rectangle, he also used an 'additional mark', being a house.
On 23-3-1760 he was baptized as son of Gerrit and Anna Gesina Broekhuis. He married on 4-6-1787 with Berta Nieuwhout, who came from Hattem. He was assayer of the guild in 1791-1792 and in 1807. In 1808 he received F 51 guilders from the city of Zwolle 'for three silver gate keys in Flowering Month (May) 1808', which were ordered by the city to be able to offer to Lodewijk Bonaparte, then king of Holland, during his visit to Zwolle. Gerrit Jan Schuurman died in 1818.
