EGYPTIAN Revival Enamel Pendant

Post by Dannd »

Hi all,

I recently purchased this cast sterling pendant which I believe was made within the Egyptian revival period (1900-1920c) as it's marked sterling (not 925 as later pieces are). It is a green enamel (jewel?) beetle which I wouldn't call a scarab but I think it's meant to imitate Egyptian scarab/sun imagery. The only other marking is "OSIRIS" and the only manufacturer I can find that is associated with this term is Osiris Metallwarenfabrik fur Kleinkunst (/Walter Scherf) who marked their sterling tableware with the OSIRIS mark (they also had a pewter line that was called ISIS) but I can't find any jewelry by them besides a belt buckle.

So every time I do a Google image search I get a costume jewelry beetle but nothing like this one. Also I can't really search "Osiris pendant" without getting literal pendants of Osiris (the god). So I was hoping someone here may have some answers!

I did manage to find an almost identical beetle on buckle made by Austrian firm Turriet & Bardach from 1900c. https://vmfa.museum/piction/6027262-109060707/

Unfortunately, not too much (English) information or examples of sterling pieces by them but its almost a 95% match. Thanks for your help!
