A bronze panel depicting the horrors of war and designed by a Boston artist is nearing completion at the bronze foundry of the Gorham Mfg. Co. and will be placed in the center of the memorial to the World War dead in the State of Maine, to be dedicated in the near future at Kittery, Me.

DEATH OF FREDERICK WALKER

Veteran Silverware Salesman Passes Away at the Home of His Son

Frederick Walker, for many years associated with the silverware industry, died last Wednesday at the home of his son, 294 Park St., Montclair, N. J. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Messiah, Greene and Claremont Aves., Brooklyn, N. Y., on Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock, with Rev. John Barrington officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Walker’s last connection in the industry was with the Gorham Co., where he acted as salesman for almost 20 years. He retired two years ago owing to ill health and since then had been living with his son.

Mr. Walker was born in Pawtucket, R. I., and was in his 87th year at the time of his death. He was for 29 years manager of E. G. Webster & Co., silversmiths at that time located at 10 Maiden Lane, New York. After leaving the Webster concern, he became associated with the Gorham Co. on Oct. 31, 1904, and remained there until his retirement.

Mr. Walker was treasurer of the Sons of Old Brooklynites, charter and oldest member of the Covenant Lodge, F. & A. M., Brooklyn, and was prominent in the Masonic Veterans’ Society. He was a former resident of Brooklyn where for 65 years he was a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Messiah. For 40 years he was active in the Sunday School work of this church.

Gorham again helps sponsor Mrs. America competition

For the third consecutive year, the Gorham Co. will be a sponsor of the Mrs. America contest.

Gorham sterling silver will be used by entrants in the contest to set formal dinner tables. The winner will receive a Gorham sterling service for 12, including serving pieces valued at $1,000. Mrs. America endorsement in advertising at the dealer and retail levels is planned. Final competition for the Mrs. America title will be held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., June 11-23.

Five at Gorham get long-service awards

President Wilbur N. Norton of Gorham Manufacturing Co., recently presented sterling silver trays to five employees whose aggregate working total is 263 years and nine months.

The persons honored, including four men and one woman: Frank J. Thoennissen, who began in June 1906; F. Russell Woodward, May 1909; Sarah A. L. Hart, September 1908; Andrew J. Fiedor, June 1903; Gustaf O. G. Franzen, September 1909.

Gorham buys Friedman, Silverplate maker

Gorham Mfg. Co., Providence, R. I, has bought the 52-year-old Friedman Silver Co., Inc., of Brooklyn, N. Y. Gorham plans to move the Friedman operation to Providence during the summer.

This marks Gorham’s third corporate acquisition this year. Other firms taken into the Gorham combine in 1960 are Rabun Bronze Foundry, Inc., Los Angeles, and Pickard & Burns, Inc., Needham, Mass.

Friedman makes silverplated hollowware.

Larue G. Morris and Walter J. Robbie have been named vice-presidents of Eaton Paper Corp., wholly-owned subsidiary of Gorham Manufacturing Co. Morris has been sales manager of Eaton since 1938. Robbie has been with Gorham for 15 years, last served as manufacturing manager of the firm’s electronics division.

Thomas W. Goodwin

Thomas W. Goodwin, chief engineer of the Gorham Corp., has been elected a vice-president. He will coordinate corporate programs for plants and equipment, in conjunction with all Gorham subsidiaries. In addition, Goodwin will work with the personnel department in its management development and employee training programs. Since joining Gorham in 1926, Goodwin has been principally responsible for all plant maintenance and engineering.

William G. Lawton, son of John F. P. Lawton, assistant treasurer of the Gorham Mfg. Co., who occupies a responsible position in the chasing department of the company’s works, has been unable to conduct his regular work for the past fortnight because of a serious case of blood poisoning. His right hand and arm were badly affected.

George W. Rhodes, for 26 years previous to last Spring foreman of the annealing department at the Gorham Mfg. Co., is named for appointment as a deputy sheriff of Providence County.

The suit of Walter Schultz against the the Gorham Co. for $20,000 damages has been placed on the calendar of the Superior Court for trial. The plaintiff alleges in his declaration that on Oct. 9, 1908, while employed by the defendant corporation, he was engaged in polishing a metal door on an emery wheel which burst, several of the the pieces striking the plaintiff about the head and face. His head, it is claimed, was cut in several places, his skull fractured, and permanent injuries received to his eyes and hearing.
