24K Gold or Not?

Post by vote4tom »

I purchased this advertised as "tested" 24K gold, but not marked. Then, I found this tiny mark on the back that I am guessing indicates 24K, or not? Anyone familiar with this symbol and/or the country of origin that uses it? It was advertsied as "Egyptian," so maybe? Thanks.

I do not know much about Egypt gold marks, but the item looks like a variation of the Egypt Gold Cartouche's that are advertised for sale as 18k with purity mark. Is it about 1.5 inches long?

This is a great candidate for assay by specific gravity.

The lefthand mark indicates city of origin (not sure if Cairo or Alexandria), the bottom section of it, which is worn, shows the Karat number in Arabic numerals. Although it is worn, believe the second number is an 8 whose form is simply a "^" with a more acute angle. From the evidence on hand, it would seem that the worn numerals are 18.

Regards, Tom

ps. here is a link to a post that discusses specific gravity testing.
