Can someone tell me what this is for by Meriden B Co

There is a U shaped piece that connects the two post and acts as a handle that is broken off. The "egg shaped bowl" splits in half and slides up the posts. There is another stamp on the base "Pat July 14, 1868". Thank you in advance.

Believe that's a butter dish.
This style was popular in America during the 1880's and 1890's.
