Georg Jensen sterling silver - what is this?

Post by Adam.NYC »

Thanks for looking. The number marked is 198, but I couldn't find another piece like it. I have no idea what this is. Any guesses?

Thanks! Adam

Hi Adam-

Might sound strange, but the shape and size reminds me of an oyster knfe, without a decent handle.

Hi Adam,

A book mark perhaps?

If it is an oyster knife or any other food implement, what is the chain for? A bookmark? The chain is too fragile to withstand that type of use!

Thanks for looking but I hope for more guesses!

Have seen a lot of Jensen pieces, must admit this one is a mystery to me, but my first thought was a combination paper knife/bookmark.

It's a mini-scourge for self-flagellation. At least, it has that effect on me when trying to reason it out... ;)

Hi,
Although I like salmoned's id the best, have to go along with Cheryl's. I've seen the chain & decorative weight before on bookmarks, although only on examples that have the split piercing of the blade that allows them to be wedged onto a single book leaf. (Awkward description, if you don't know what I mean, will try and find a photo to illustrate).

Was given a sweet novelty bookmark as a child (mid 1960s), which had a mouse at one end and a cat holding onto the other end of the chain "tail".

Ok. I will accept bookmark! I thought the fish would be a clue to the use but I guess not!

Jensen used the identical fish design as a bracelet charm, probably elswhere as well.

Here's some book marks from Gorham's 1888 catalog.
