Vampire comb - French - Gold and tortoiseshell

Post by galessa »

hey, everybody!
this is a wonderful gold and tortoiseshell comb that bears the mercury hallmark, so i think it may be French. does anybody can identify the maker's mark? and date it? thank you for any clues.

You are right about the mercury head. The maker's mark is from a Paris jeweler - Peconnet, Charles. His mark was valid from 1876 - 1902.

Hope that helps. Great comb!

In Vivian Becker's book "Art Nouveau Jewelry" she describes Charles Peconnet's mark as a "pike surmounted by a star; CP.
No picture or drawing of the mark is shown.

The only other information given is this:
"Peconnet. French firm of jewelers. Vever illustrates a group of their diamond and pearl set rings made around 1898-1900".
