The marks appear Middle Eastern. The stones could be citrine, padparadscha sapphire, or possibly yellow topaz. A good gemologist could descern the difference in person.

here a suggestion

turn the stones over. if you see banded zones with abt 120 degree angles and it looks verypale it is citrine; if in has a substantial colour difference without obvious striations it is a yellow sapphire, if there is no change in colour you have topaz.

(padparadscha has an almost incandescent pale fire between pink and gold so i don't think it is that likely a prospect and 22k is a rather high karat for citrine)

Hi and thanks so much the stone looks the same from the underside with no colour variation etc etc.......has me totally stumped.....all i know is that the ring is very old......always get the comments when i wear it.

Thanks for going to the trouble to give such a detailed answer.

hello again

with no colour change, given the age of the ring and the high value of the gold, i would suspect the stones to be topaz.

but check with your jeweller because if it is topaz then you might consider replacing the stones with a sturdier gem - topaz has perfect cleavage in one direction - that means if you apply pressure on the wrong spot, if there already is a weakness you can fracture the stone - http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/w ... _topaz.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; will show you what that looks like - tho i don't think they put in the owner's copious tears!

Hi and thanks for being such a sweetie to put up that link....the ring was a gift to my Mother from my late Father and as he travelled all over the world.......could have been bought anywhere.....been too out of it with migraine to go to yet another jeweller:(

Have a great day,
