I recently found this lovely and very worn russian snuffbox. The size is 7,8 x 4,8 x 1,8 cm, weight 110 gr. As far as I found out its Moscou 1860 (poor reading). Please help with assayer aund maker...
Many thanks in advance

Hi Wolfgang,

I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like the maker's mark of Ivan Futikin overstriking that of another. As the date appears to be 1860 and my reference gives the working dates for Futikin as 1863-1897, perhaps he was also a retailer who acquired it secondhand?

Regards Trev.

Hello.

Can't read the initials for the assayer.
For a 1860 Moscow mark it would have been either I. Avdeyev or Viktor Savinkov.

The letters for Avdeyev can very faintly be read! Thanks Pat! But it can't be Futikin, because the first letter is not the cyrillic "I", but H for the cyrillic "N" and thats very clear in the photo. So, who is "NF" ?

My reference, Paul L. Paulson's book, shows a similar mark as unidentified.

Hi,

Geoffrey Watts in his book 'Russian Silversmiths Hallmarks' 1700-1917 attributes that mark to N N Fyeofilov 1881-1894.

Will try to post a picture tonight.

Hi Trev, hi Pat thank you very much for your help - I think there is no further identification possible... Your observation that the mark of the original maker is overstruck is clearly visible - but overstruck after more than 20 years (in case it's Fyeofilov), does it make sense?
Thanks again for parting your knowledge with me
regards Wolfgang
