The piece has a pierced, star-shaped design insert that fits into the inside, bottom of the bowl. We have been told this piece was for storing cut lemons. Do you know if that is correct? If not, do you know what this piece would have been used for? The numbers stamped on the bottom are "95" and "1724". It was difficult to photograph the marks because of where they are on the piece, so we have included an exampld of the mark from one of our resource books. Also, would you consider this to be in the Aesthetic Style? Any insight you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hi,
Believe it is a butter cooler, ice or cold water goes under the pierced platform, butter on top.
The style pre-dates the Aesthetic Movement by fifteen years or so.
