Small Measuring Tool

This little object was made in 1901 by Saunders and Shepherd; it has inch markings on it. What was it used for measuring?

My guess is that it's used when sewing.

Thanks for that, Pat. I did a little bit of surfing to see if it has a name, and came upon "knitting gauge" which might fit the bill.
It seems to be narrower at one end, but my knowledge of knitting is so poor that I can't think of an explanation for it.

Maybe a hem or hemming gauge ?

It could be, Tom; but it's only three inches and isn't very comfortable to hold.

Thought is was a sixer. Although I have seen 3 inch sterling desk rules, I have to admit that, in this form, the idea does not make much sense.

At this size, I'm with Patrick and guess it is some arcane sewing related implement.

I think it is a tongue depressor (measurer) used by a doctor of speach therapy. ;-)
