800 Silver Handled Silver Bowl - Hungarian mark or Other?

Post by ronenros »

Hi,

I acquired this lovely handled footed footed bowl last weekend. I bought three other pieces at the same time - one is Austro-Hungarian and the other two are clearly Hungarian. This one has me puzzled. I thought that the mark might be Hungarian, but the piece looks 19th century and that definitely isn't an Austro-Hungarian mark, at least to my knowledge. Does anyone know this mark?

Thanks in advance,

Ron

Hello.

Tardy's shows that mark as Hungarian, introduced in 1965.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the ID - I am confused however, as the piece doesn't look like a newer piece. Does that look like it dates post-1965 to you?

Best regards

Hi Ron.

I'm confident it does date to after 1965.

Styles for different time periods can vary from country to country.
For example, I made a post a few days ago with a teapot that, to Americans, would appear to be 20th century.
Actually it was Scottish from the 18th century. Check here:

Hi,
Don't forget that there are far more reproductions of antique pieces than there are genuine antique pieces.
I'd bet that the bulk of today's production by almost any major silver manufacturer is in antiquated styles.

Thanks Pat and Tony,

I bow to your expertise - now, do you think that the H is a maker's mark or do the Hungarians have a dating system?

Thanks again,

Ron
