Since you are related to the Coatsworths, I thought you might like to see a couple of pictures I took monday.
First picture is of Joseph Coatsworth's building as it looks today. (The tan brick building).
It was rebuilt in the 1970's, but they tried to preserve the original appearance.
Second picture is of the plaque on the front of the building idenifying it as an Illinois State Historical Site.
In 1858 Joseph Coatsworth leased a ground floor shop, the basement and the third floor to J.R. Grant who was the father of President Ulysses S. Grant.
J.R. Grant operated a leather goods business. Ulysses S. Grant worked with his father there for about a year just before the Civil War started.
On the plaque it's called the Coatsworth Barrows Building.
Joseph Coatsworth purchased the land for the building from D.A. Barrows in 1854.
