Need help identifying mark/date on a large silver platter

Post by conletb1 »

It has the date 1876 scratched on it next to the mark, but I don't know who did it.

Thanks!

I was just looking closer at the mark on this platter and I noticed that the number '1' looks just like a typewriter #1. So, wouldn't that pretty much guarantee that this platter isn't that old? Has anyone ever seen a mark of antiquity with numbers like this? I'm really doubting the age that someone scratched next to the mark. If anyone has any other ideas about this item, please chime in. I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Tim

There is no reason to assume that the scratched numbers = date. Aside from scratch weights on 18th century British sterling, scratched marks are almost always marks put on by repairmen and replaters.
