Hello admin,

thank you for that note, I had some Emailtraffic with "Wilkens und Soehne", they will look into their old books.

And here another picture of the bottle cooler:


If wanted and permitted I will tell you their achievement.
The five digit number, they told me, is a serial number.
The name, they believe, is the name of C. E. Keyser in Leipzig, a former jeweller, founded in 1822, but still out of business. He once was one of their distributors.

Is it permitted to set up a link to Wilkens?

According to Alfred Löhr's Bremer Silber (Bremen: Bremer Landesmuseum, 1982), the catalogue for a 1981/82 exhibition of Bremen silver, Wilkins design number 98443 was issued in 1893. Of course, designs were produced for many years - sometimes decades - after their introduction, but I wonder if this might not be a little earlier than you suppose.

Why you think this dates from the 1940's? It isn't a modern design at all, though there was a fondness for this "Schwartzwald"-inspired decor in the 1940's among, shall we say, a segment of the German elite.

@ blakstone: There is a family crest on the rearward side of the bottle cooler and this, let´s say V.I.P., was best known of his activities in the 1930´s up to 1946.
