Woven Box - "AN in shield", "925", "

[Lazy Dave]

Can anyone shed some light on these hallmarks and and what they mean. I am not completely ignorant (or Lazy), I know the 925 is silver, the D is date but I can't track down which year, AN would be the maker but I cant find who, the unknown symbol might mean its an import assayed at London.





If anyone can enlighten me though I would appreciate it.

That's a London import mark for 1978. 'AN' would have been the importer.

Are there no other marks on this piece?

The importer was A D Norman who registered this shield shaped mark at the London Assay Office in the 1970's.

Bit of info on A D Norman
Ari D Norman is probably one of the most high profile modern silversmiths having been given the Freedom of the City of London in 1989 in recognition of his work. I believe, although I'm not sure, that Ari Norman lobbied, obviously unsuccessfully, to have the date letter retained in the convention marks.

Thought you might be interested to know that in 1989 Ari D Norman were the first silversmith to be awarded the Queen's Award for Export Achievement and were uniquely allowed by the Assay office to include the award logo of crossed swords and a crown in the hallmark for the year 1989-90 only. Sorry the photo isn't as clear as it could be
