first think tis site is amazing and did find alots of mark for other stuff bud about this one ????think its from uk,birmingham bud realy cant find the stuff a want like jear makers country whot it is etc...realy app if sombody can help!!!!

Hi Cliff,

The '260' would be a factory pattern number, as for the use of this dish, with a straining plate, if it had been larger I would have thought is was for serving fish, but with it being so small I really have no idea.

It is most likely a butter dish, the bottom section for shaved ice or cold water.

There is a large selection of these illustrated in the Meriden Silverplate catalog of 1883, these date to about 15 or 20 years later than your medallion piece. Butter servers begin on page 32.

I think it's too small to be a a mazarine. I believe Tom's suggestion is the correct one, a butter dish.
