English Female Silversiths of the 18th & 19th Century

Post by gerryb22 »

I am currently researching English female silversmiths of the 18th & 19th century and am seeking any help in compiling a list of names so that I can then carry out further research into the individuals concerned. Any assistance would be gratefully received. Many Thanks. Gerry

Hi Gerry,

Welcome to the Forum.

Is it just English info that you seek?

Hi Trev
At present I am trying to confine my research to English silversmiths but would also be interested in all area's to enable me to make possible comparisions.

Many Thanks Gerry

Hello Gerry,

From my lists of marks registered with all Assay Offices the following ladies with the first initial A may be worth research as they are known to have been involved in the silver trade for some time; whether as silversmiths is another matter because the mark may have been registered by them as retailers:

Alice Burrows registered at London 1801 with her husband George and continued to c1818.
Ann Milson registered at London 1871 and continued to c1876.
Ann Robertson registered at Newcastle 1801 and continued to c1820.
Ann Reid registered at London 1843 and continued to c1851.
Amelia Wickes of Coventry registered at London & Chester with Frederick Trahern and was in business 1877-c1889.

My records show 22 ladies with the first initial A registered their names, some as widows in order to continue their deceased husband’s silver trade, most seemingly in business for quite a short time.
Those ladies registering with the first initial B-Z could be extracted from the records given time if the above names prove useful to you.

Hello again Gerry,

A window of opportunity arose and the list below gives you more names; ladies using their registered mark for less than three years have been ignored.

There were no names with first initial B satisfying the criterion.
Caroline Arnell London 1853-64
Catherine Clarke London 1761-73
Charlotte Forrester with Richard Morgan London 1855-64
Caroline Green London 1861-76 and with husband Henry G to 1879
Dorothy Langlands Newcastle 1804-14
Desiree Narcisse London 1824-42
Elizabeth Brown Birmingham 1825-35
Elizabeth Cooke London 1764-69
Elizabeth Cook London & Birmingham 1792-99
Elizabeth Conen London 1845-49
Elizabeth Dyer London 1851-64
Elizabeth Eaton London 1845-64
Elizabeth Edwards London 1851-67
Elizabeth M Edwards with F P Edwards London 1874-84
Elizabeth Godfrey London 1741-57
Elizabeth Hartley London 1748-52
Elizabeth Jones London 1784-94
Elizabeth Muns London 1768-96
Eliza (Eliezer) Nash London 1834-78
Elizabeth Tuite London 1741-69
Elizabeth Tookey London 1768-74
Eliza Wray London 1854-58
Emma Weil London 1893-99

Have you enough for now?

Women Silversmiths 1685-1845

Post by SilverSurfer »

If you haven't already done so, I recommend reviewing the text "Women Silversmiths 1685-1845" by Philippa Glanville and Jennifer Faulds Goldsborough, published by The National Museum Of Women In The Arts with Thames and Hudson, 1990 (0-940979-10-1). This book covers female Brit silversmiths in the indicated period, and has a nice (but not comprehensive) index of maker's marks at the end.
