Admin question

Post by leesasimpson »

Hi, I just posted a question on the british colonial forum, but my post got moved to plated, I don't think that would be the appropriate spot for it, since it is not plated(I tested it for silver content and there are several deep gouges that were pre existing that don't point to plating or heavy plating). I understand that items that aren't marked can be plated, but i tested this piece. Unless there is something you know that you aren't telling me? The whole reason I put it in British Colonial was there was a Sir Willliam Hove that served during the revolutionary war, and that is why I placed it in that section.

Thanks

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

For a piece without marks, the silver plated section is good place to start as it attracts more than its fair share of hits. If we get some feedback then it's no problem to move it again. If there is no responce, then jog my memory and we'll be happy to try it somewhere else.

Amateurish Silver Test attempts

Post by silverport »

Hello Mrs. Simpson et all

I hope for final, that all refrains attempts of (aggressive) Silver Test; but maybe not before many years have passed?

When I was a novice it was said, that I’ve to buy an acid test set, and a stone to rub on them the items. For final, they don’t give rest until I’ve buy a set - »to become an “expert”« they said.

That looked to me barbaric and a little bit stupid as well! Because I’m a visual oriented person; be gifted as human beings with eyes and an additional brain too.

Barbaric, because the object must be rubbed and acid attacked! Stupid, because for what are there the punches?

I’m collecting now some ten years — and the set has remained virgin! Maybe I need it in my tomb? My tombstone already exists as well.

I’ve never read my instructions to get a driving licence — and my test sheet was with zero mistakes; because I’ve listen and looked to the theoretical instructions of the instructor.

I’ve read in between many books on silver and their marks; have bought some of them as well. And also I’ve handled in between many thousands of objects — also if I haven’t bought them. That all was in the period before »internet«, »google« …

The »internet« is now a source too — some area of “shallow water”; there you would need guidance or personal knowledge. Until yet I haven’t had the possibility to look to and read all »internet« sources on silver!

But if I read there »I’ve tested it« or »I’ve made an acid test«, then it sent me shivers down my spine! I state: »Acid« is the »Golden calf« of amateurish behaviour.

Existing many not destructive methods — well, for some is experience and knowledge be needed as well. There exists e.g. the so called »Density Test Method« or »Gravity Test Method«.

I hope that you — and others too — would take the time for to read the topics on this non destructive method. Touch here in »925-1000« the sensible page area »Search the Silver Forums« in the upper middle part of the page. In the window that opens, type in »Keyword« blank’s area keywords, like: “density” or “gravity” — and enter to all the readings, offered there; sufficient for to get a basic information.

Well I know the problem: Many like to get the information as quick as possible — but almost all have already bought the item; and often they have bought an investment “ruin”. Then after result of their acid test, they sell this “ruin” as quick as possible, with correct statement of been »acid tested«, without to tell the real result. But the next buyer, maybe a novice, is impressed from the statement of been »acid tested«, similar to one of »Pawlow's dogs«. After some additional “change of hands”, the item is be coming really a »ruin«!

Getting knowledge of marks and their signification has more human value for every silver lover, as some drops of acid!

Kind regards silverport
