WM Hove signed Wax Seal

Post by leesasimpson »

Hi, I have this interchangeable wax stamp, which is missing the wax seal mold. It has the inscription WM Hove scratched into it, do you think this fits within the Revolutionary war period? Any information or insight would be helpful. It tested for silver, but is not marked anywhere.

Thanks

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

My knowledge on these seal holders is scant, but until about 1790 they were exempt from assay so it would be no surprise to see one that had not been hallmarked.

As for missing engraved section, its loss may not be accidental. There was, I believe, a tradition in the 18th century of destroying the seal upon the death of the owner. Hopefully someone with a better knowledge of such pieces can add some information.

Regards Trev.

Hi Lisa,

Just looking at your item again. How big is it?

Hi,
The item is not a seal, it is the top handle to the lid of a serving dish, the fins are a locking mechanism that sets it in place with a half turn. There is a possibility that it is American and sterling, but if it is British it would have to be marked with at least a lion passant stamp if sterling.

Regards, Tom
