Unknown Marks on Tablespoon

Post by dognose »

Hi,

Can anyone help with the origin and maker of this 8" (20.5cm) tablespoon?

Warden or city?

Standard and year?

Maker's mark, 'A.' above '**RI'?

Any thoughts appreciated, the marks have a Maltese or Spanish feel to them, but I can't find a match.

Hi Trev,
Nice - Spanish it is, the 'palm tree MCA' is for Palma de Mallorca used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The mark is illustrated in "Marcas de Plata; Espanola y Virreinal", the book also shows another letter/number mark (B over 09) the explanatory text says "1809?". Apparently the authors are none too sure that a date system was in use, but if so, yours would seem to indicate assay in 1764. The maker's mark is not listed, I think it is probably 'A. Mori' and possibly an abbreviation.
