Spoon with Berlin hallmark

Post by flaubert »

Hi,

I guess the bear with the letter 'L' stands for Berlin, mit 19th century, am I correct? I could not find the letter 'L' in Rosenberg's Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen. Does anybody know which maker used the wide zigzag line in combination with the gothic 'D'? I assume 'Wiln' would be the mark for the merchant?

This is the answer on two Questions.
Wilm was the mastermark of Hermann Julius Wilmand
the zigzag line is called "Tremolierstrich" - was a trial to test the fineness.

Berlin bear L = XIX century ... Wilm (in script) = maker H. J. Wilm

Hello Flaubert

Berlin bear L = XIX century; also if not mentioned by »R3«, vol. I, p. 253, between nr. 1161 and 1162.

Zigzags-line = »Zeichenmeister« or Assay fineness control sign; please look here: http://www.925-1000.com/silverglossary.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Gothic letter D = Berlin »Zeichenmeister« or Secondary Assayers mark, after 1818; look to »R3«, vol. I, p. 254, between nr. 1166 and 1167. Please look here (Berlin City Mark): http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_marks_b1884.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Wilm (in script) = Maker’s mark, or maker’s sign of H. J. Wilm, Berlinlater he and his successors became »Court Supplier« to the Prussian Kings Court, and from 1871 on to the German Emperors Court.

So I guess: Made at least after 1820/1825. I personally haven’t more detailed time indications.

Kind regards silverport
