800 Silver Fork & Knife

Post by elke standifur »

Could you please assist me in identifying the maker of these pieces as well as their use or function. I first thought that they looked like a fish set, but they are so small. I found the marking of the prancing lion in several hallmarks from Germany, but there is an absence of the half moon, so I am not sure.
Thank you.

Maybe a Confection set? Maybe made by Gebr. Deyhle, Schwäb. Gmünd?

Hello »elke standifur«

It’s a pity that your both photos aren’t available — so my attempt to answer yours question is only a guess - based on yours description, so as I understand her, and my imaginations.

It could be, that yours tiny knife and fork are these for eating confection.

It could be that the mark of a prancing lion is the maker’s mark of »Gebrüder Deyhle« (Deyhle Bros.) from Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany.

Please look here for an example of their mark (scroll down):

It was after 1 January 1888 by lack of space often usual by German makers, to indicate only the fineness; in your case the German minimum fineness of 800-1,000. Crescent and Crown often aren’t struck then; because normally in Germany they don’t struck as the French, inside the bowls of cutlery.

I request you very kindly, if you would take notice from my late answer: Please add again the pictures; available as long as ever possible. In advance I thank you there fore!

Kind regards silverport
