Art Deco Marcasite Bracelet - Who is CW? Real or Repro?

Post by pivii »

Beautiful marcasite sterling art deco (in design at least) bracelet signed CW. I couldn't find this signature in the database. There were a lot of marcasite deco repros in the 80s... this one may or may not be a 30s piece.

There was a lead to a very similar make, a brooch with such stones, archived on W---opedia (can I say that here?). The seller seemed to be of the impression that it was a Charles Winston, but was also of the impression that it was vintage. Doesn't jive. From what I've seen online, Winston is of the tennis bracelet and cubic zirconia ilk. I've seen one image of his signature, a sweeping, somewhat airy italicized CW, with the lower part of the C scripting into the W.

So who is the maker of this bracelet? It does appear to be quite well made, the stones are beautiful, alternate between round and square pyramid cuts.

Including 5 images: full front, side showing the setting, back showing the links, closeup on hallmark, closeup on stones. (Though not necessarily in that order)

Thank you in advance.

I have seen the CW mark *many* times, mostly on newer jewelry and bracelets. I'll have to go through my stuff and see if I have another piece with this mark for reference. That's as much info that I can give you about it, sadly, I've always been under the impression that CW was a commercial maker of some sort. I've never figured out who it is, but I guess silverly's USPTO info will help us with that.

I can't vouch for the stylized CW mark, but as far as I know Charles Winston's mark is "CWE" (which stands for Charles Winston Enterprises). I once had a CZ necklace of his with that mark, although it may be a newer hallmark or just a variant of what he usually uses.

This appears to be a fairly modern piece. As you can see in the posted images, most of the square stones are crooked in their setting (I suspect they are glued in) and at least one is smaller than the other square ones. An origional Art Deco piece would have been made with more respect for the outcome.

I have to say that for my eye this is definitely a Marsala piece. I kind of "back peddled" the answer in my first reply in order to give the poster a chance to come to his or her own decision. Either way I don't mind being wrong if it means a better answer can be found.

Here's an earlier post concerning this manufacturer that has a good tinypic image of the mark: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... ala#p48543" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
