Whose Mark? JW

Post by Pete9077 »

I am wondering if anyone is familiar with this mark on an Italian Souvenir Spoon?

Not seeing a single tree in the Forest?

Hello »Pete9077«

That’s always a problem to be a »New be«:

Not seeing a single tree in the Forest!

Please read here the introduction:

http://www.925-1000.com/enyc_Overview.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Please look often here:

http://www.925-1000.com/foreign_marks.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In this case you would observe:

»The marks are German«

For basic information then look here:

http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_marks.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There you would find a division — in yours case it is the »Crescent and Crown« period = after 1886:

http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_marks.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Actually you wouldn’t find there »J.W.«.

I even so couldn’t tell you who the maker »J.W.« is - because in Germany were by time and while some hundred’s of little workshops and little factories busy with a manifold of souvenir articles, not only spoons.

Often the basic pattern was mass produced by some others — and only the enamel decoration was added by some body else.

Yours spoon’s basic pattern is in the »Art Nouveau« style = Beginning XX century or later.

But »J.W.« could be also the mark of a wholesaler?

Like e.g.

J. Wachenheimer, Frankfurt am Main (founded 1894);
Filial Pforzheim, Westliche Karl-Friedrichstr. 67.

His specialities were (in 1903):

Brooches, Pendants, Souvenir spoons, beaker, cups ...
Made in massive Silver (alloy), or in plated;
Pictures and coat of arms stamped, or in enamel.
Excellent collections for Spa, and other towns.
Production and Export for all Countries.

Kind regards silverport

Hello, I suspect a retailer's mark here: J. Wachenheimer from Frankfurt/Germany. Best wishes, Bahner

Why should a retailer in Germany sell souvenir spoons from Italy ? More probably, the maker JW sold spoons in bulk to be enameled later in Italy.

Germany manufactured souvenir spoons for export to numerous different countries, see no reason that this piece or those for the other countries would have been enameled in the country represented rather than in Germany.

Silverport and Bahner have both come up with the same name - were they a wholesaler (indicating "production") or a retailer selling other manufacturers' production?

Sorry, my mistake in translating - my source (from 1929) states "Großhändler", that is wholesaler, not retailer. As to the marks on this piece - why punch it with German marks that are not legit in Italy and then export it to that country to have it enamelled ? Does not make sense. Regards, Bahner
