W. Settler mark info?

Post by bubba »

Coin spoon with W. Settler mark and 3 pseudo marks. Identify town, maker dates and first name, please?
Would guess NY as similar pseudo markings on known NY & Phil. pieces have been seen, as well as family history from NY.

As a fair starting place for your research, there was a William Settle who was born in New York State in about 1796 who is listed in the 1850 Johnstown, New York Census as a watchmaker. His sixteen year old son William Jr is listed in the household as a watch repairer. Unless somebody more likely comes up, the elder William Settle has possibilites for the retailer of your spoon. If you end up following up on this gentleman and no other information is offered here, a historical society associated with the Johnstown area may be able to help you.
