Iranian mark? maker?

Post by Verrine »

This is small bowl (10cm diameter, 176 g) I own, I believe it is of Iranian origin, I think I can identify the Arabian numbers 84, so it is presumably 875 silver - I would greatly appreciate it if somebody could confirm this. Does anyone know the maker and the city mark and possibly the age of the bowl.

Thank you!

Verriene:

I noticed that your bowl has a hallmark similar to the posting I made 3-22 (WollyBugger). They both have an upside down "V" which I understand is the Arabic notation for the number 8. You indicate the rest of the mark on your bowl indicates a 4 which would put the silver content at .875. Would you know what the additional notations on my hallmark is. I can't see anyting in the Arabic numbers that matches. I am kind of new at this.

Hi Don,

sorry I don't know! I am not really an expert either - although striving to become one.... :-)
The way I have figured out the 84 is via the website http://www.omniglot.com and then checked on this website the silver content http://www.925-1000.com/a_Standards.html
Also I believe somebody mentions the Persian 84 in the forum.
Your mark looks more like a city mark - but really as I said - I am not an expert!

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I guess I am a slow learner. I see the 8 which is the upside down V in Arabic but I have trouble with the 4. I thought the hallmarks on both your bowl and my platter were somewhat similar with the second number (reading left to right). They both have a verticle line intersected with a horizontal line on the right side, although there are some differences. I thought the number 4 in Arabic looked like a backward 3 or am I looking at the wrong chart?

Hi Don,

I got the figure four from the Farsi List on omniglot: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/persian.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
which looks very much like the second figure after the upside down V

all the best

It's Irianian, made in Shiraz. I don't know Irianian makers marks, but by the quality of the work I would say it's not very old. probably 50 years or less.

I should also note that while the 84 mark is denoting the purity of silver, in Iran this is absolutely NOT a guarantee of fineness! It isn't unheard of for them to mark plate with 84! Naughty!
