THE UNKNOWN MARK OF THE YEAR!!! LION HEAD/SHEILD/LION HEAD

Post by kimbrowntxselect »

OK,

I have asked every Antique dealer around and everywhere and NO ONE knows this. The Ropousse Bowl weighs 1.5 lbs, stands 3.5 inches tall, width 5.5 inches wide. Ornate design very detailed. I dont know if it is solid silver or plate. I scratched the bottom and there is no under color of a non metal base. Please help! Thanks soo much!!

I have the exact same bowl (found with Google image search).

It was labeled "silver" when I bought it, but I had to remove the tag to test it so I couldn't bring it back to the thrift store from which I purchased it.

The bowl is plated to the best of my knowledge. Since the inside was damaged, I took a butter knife and scratched across one of the damaged sections and found a fairly soft, bright silver metal. I think it may be silver plated pewter since it is becomes mailable with a soldering iron, but won't liquify like lead. The under metal also turns black with acid (I used a strong vinegar and some hot sauce to get the strongest home-made acid base I could--the silver plate did NOT react, but the under metal was obviously black after a few minutes).

The bowl itself is beautiful, but I don't know if it's worth anything. I believe it is NOT vintage or antique due to the glazing which was used on its surface.

If anyone learns any more about the hallmark or the bowl itself, please post!

Ignore the following. It's just to help others looking for info on the same unidentified hallmark.
Lion Shield Lion. A shield between two lion heads. lions' heads. between two lion's heads. Mystery hallmark. Plated silver.

Better late than never... Silverplate by International Silver, mark first used in 1970.
