Hi,
This snuffertray has only one worn mark on the back. Looks like a mastermark to me. I do not know the country it was made. I bought the snuffertray years ago in England. Maybe someone knows what country it could be and who the maker could be. It is of heavy gauge, weighting 170 grammes. Long 6 1/2 inch + ( an almost 17 cm); wide 3 inches + ( an almost 8 cm); Hight 3/4 inch (2 cm). It has been gilted before because there are spurs of gilt in the rims on top and under the feet. Maybe it has been gilted in later years. In England a lot was gilted later on, I heard. I have my doubts about the combination of the flowers on top and the tray. Most snuffertrays do not have driven flowers. The form of the flowers are - in my opinion - not of the same time as the form of the tray. The form of the tray is purely Louis XIV (so first half 18e century) and the form of the flowers is more 19e century. Maybe the flowers were added later in time. On the other hand, the mark is truck over the driven flowers, so that would mean that the flowers were already there when the piece was marked. Or could it be a controlmark of later date? The last picture shows some letters (I W or EW) of a previous owner with a worn date. Looks early 18e century to me.
I would appreciate your comment on this difficult piece.
Regards,
Zilverik
