Good quality Egyptian horse

Post by zilverik »

Hi,

This is Egypt, Alexandria .900 Date: 1916-1938? Only one mark. No mastermark. Possibly this horse is part of a whole. The feet look like it has been broken out of something else. The quality is very good and that makes me curious if someone can tell more about this object. The Egyptian quality I have seen sofar is a lot less than this little statue.

Regards,

Zilverik

No it is not Alexandria, it is Cairo. It is a fault in Tardy and Divis and? What is stated in English Tardy on page 105 and page 234(?) in Divis should read Alexandria-> Cairo, Beni Suef->Alexandria, Cairo->Beni Suef, Tanta is correct. The right names are also on Tardy's pages 52-53.

Hi Qrt.S,

Thank you!
By the way, my Tardy has different pages. I have only French Tardy's. A 5e edition, a 15e edition and a 22e edition. My Divis is in Dutch and has no pagenumbers, only "mark"numbers. In the Dutch Divis (the start) this mark is mentioned as Cairo and not like Tardy as Alexandria. It is incredible that Tardy still has that sort of mistakes while they are everytime with the making of a new edition in the position to make it right.

Good morning Zilverik,

It is very unfortunate that books contain faults but is, however, unavoidable because the authors copy each other and therefore also the faults are passed over from one book to another. Why these faults are not corrected in the next edition is unbelievable negligence. There are some other "inaccuracies" in Tardy and especially in Divis. You should not keep them as your main sources but only as assisting ones. Anyway, I believe you found the marks and corrected the city names.
If you happen to also have Tardy's Poincoins d' Or et de Platine, you can check Egypt from page 59-61. There it is correct. Correct at the same time Finland on p. 177 in English Silver Tardy. What it states about purity marks showing .813 would actually be .830 and .916 being .935 is pure nonsense. The purity is at least what the punch shows.

Have a nice day

Hi Qrt.S,

Maybe it is an idea to make a section on this forum with all the mistakes found in "standard" reference books. It is not only Tardy and Divis, it is also Seymour Wyler, Rosenberg, Scheffler and others. That couldn't be that difficult. A section with only pseudomarks of different countries will have a problem because of copyrights. So, how desirable that me be, it will not be easy to make a section for that purpose, but mistakes in books could well work. Isn't there already a lot of information in all kind of posts? Maybe someone is that clever with the computer to extract that information of all kind of posts and bundle it in one section?

Regards,

Zilverik
