New info on silverplate marks.

Hi everyone.

I have been doing a lot of research on pewter marks lately.
In my travels I have come accross information on some silverplate marks we were unsure of in the past.
This information is not conclusive, but just more clues that hopefully point us in the right direction.

I've seen this one attributed to Harrison Fisher in the past, it is in fact Henry Fielding & Sons.





Fielding's works were at Snape Street, Birmingham, they also had a London showroom at 5, Hatton Garden. They were established in 1830.

Henry Fielding made his fortune in the silverware trade, in 1853 he had a fine mansion built for himself called 'Marchmount' at Wylde Green, Sutton Coldfield. Although demolished in the 1950's, the name is still remembered in Marchmount Road.

Not long ago someone was looking for a close plate mark that had an R in the center with rectangles on each side.
As I remember, we could not read the name in the rectangles.
Could not find the post, so I'm posting some information here just in case someone remembers the thread.

The business of E. Allport was noted as located at Cannon Street, Birmingham in 1812.

Edward Allport, likely to be the same person, is noted as a Coach Harness Plater of Great Charles Street, Birmingham in Wrightson's New Triennial Directory of Birmingham in 1818.

S. Bright & Co. - Sheffield - 1863

The top image is taken from George Mappin's 'Electroplated Nickel Silver Makers' Marks', the bottom image is from an advertisement for S. Bright & Co. of Sheffield that appeared in 1863.

Either George Mappin has made an error, or the Trade Mark has changed hands or maybe Atkinson Brothers took over Brights or vise versa.

The one thing we know for sure is that S. Bright & Co. were using the Trade Mark in 1863.

This is the full registered trademark for Robert Pringle & Sons of London:





The 'WW' that can just be made out at the juction of the axes, stands for the 'Wilderness Works'.


And this the mark of White, Henderson & Co., Elcho Works, 16, Burgess Street, Sheffield:





Sometimes mis-attributed to William Hutton.

Confirmation of Henry Fielding's mark

A 1866 advertisement that see's Henry Fielding breaking into the American market.

In case you have a problem reading it, it states:

Plated and nickel silver spoons and forks - Henry Fielding and Son beg to call the attention of buyers of spoons, forks, fish carvers, ladles, knife rests, nut crackers, grape scissors etc., to their extensive assortment of patterns. An illustrated price list forwarded on application. Their nickel silver is of superior quality, warranted of the same colour throughout and of no change with cleaning. Snape Street Works, Birmingham. Goods packed and shipped to New York, Boston etc.

I'm not aware of coming across this maker before. Harrison Henry & Co. (late Harrison & Hancock), Atwell Works, Pond Hill, Sheffield.

I may have found a clue to one of our long, unidentified silverplate marks.





I have seen a pieces with this set of marks with a Eton Silver lable also.
Eton Silver Company, Glendale New York is listed as a manufacturer and importer.
Active from the 1960's to, at least, the mid 1970's.



Notice the symbol on the left of these marks used by Meneses Orfebres of Madrid Spain.
It's very similar to the middle mark on our unidentified set of marks.
Their website says they were exporting to America as early as the late 19th century.

Thanks for the info Silverly.

Their website says in 1965 they formed some king of partnership
with Christofle and Maltilde Espunes forming La Union de Orfebres S.A.

Maybe it's just me, but the top unidentified mark example appears to just have simplified "line" versions of the mark below it, with the center symbol being an eccentric fleur-de-lis (even has the same little center cross-bar).

I am trying to find some information on a tray with the same marks. Of all the importers and makers mentioned, I am still unable to make the connections.

A teapot I have has the same marks, but the image is negative, with the (backwards) c on the left, followed by the same two m's.

I have a tea set from my grandmother with tray, sugar, creamer, coffee pot and tea pot. The M fleur di lis and crown with a C or G under it is very visible on the creamer. The set has a Lilly of the valley motif. I haven’t been able to identify where it’s from yet
